ResumenThis session will focus on the challenges of water management in urban centers and opportunities for improvements which can contribute to sustainable cities throughout the American continent. There will be contributions from 7 panelists, all water experts (Water Program-IANAS) from 6 regions which include South America- Atlantic, South America-Pacific, Central America, Mexico, Caribbean Islands, and North America followed by Conclusions for the Americas. The IANAS Water Program has just recently published a “Summary of Urban Water Challenges in the Americas: Perspective from the Academies of Sciences” which is specifically orientated to Policymakers and includes brief summaries from 21 countries and conclusions for the Americas.

Panelists will touch on the Sustainable Development Goals for 2030 specifically on Goal 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all and Goal 7: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
In the remaining 30 minutes the session will strive to promote exchange of views with students and scientists on creating conditions for sustainable cities with good water management, interchange with policy- and decisionmakers to suggest solutions for improvement of water management in urban centers and surrounding areas and create proposals for cities to improve their management of water resources and better quality of life for city communities with good access and quality of water.
