Graciela Díaz de Delgado

Born in Maracaibo, Venezuela, in 1959, Prof. Díaz de Delgado carried out undergraduate degree studies in Chemistry at Universidad de Los Andes (ULA) in Mérida, Venezuela. She obtained M.A. (1985) and Ph.D. (1988) degrees in Chemistry from Brandeis University in Waltham, MA, USA. In January of 1989 she joined the Faculty of the Department of Chemistry at Universidad de Los Andes in Venezuela as Assistant Professor with Tenure and is Full Professor since 2002.
She is member of the American Crystallographic Association (ACA), International Centre for Diffraction Data (ICDD), American Chemical Society (ACS), Sociedad Venezolana de Química (SVQ), Asociación Venezolana para el Avance de la Ciencia (AsoVAC), founding member of Sociedad Venezolana de Cristalografía (SVCr), and of the Latin American Crystallographic Association (LACA), currently serving as Secretary.
Among several distinctions received, she is Fellow of ICDD and has been an accredited researcher in Programs of the Ministry of Science and Technology and Universidad de Los Andes, Venezuela. Prof. Díaz de Delgado is an Elected member of the Executive Committee of the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) for the period 2017-2023.
She is author of more than 70 publications, has numerous presentations as invited speaker at international scientific meetings, and is a regular instructor in schools and workshops, particularly in Latin America. As part of her academic activities, she has been thesis adviser of Undergraduate, Master, and Ph.D. degree students.
She is member of the editorial board of Journal of Chemical Crystallography, Journal of Coordination Chemistry and of Crystal Growth and Design between 2014-2017, and acts as reviewer for these and other prestigious journals.
Additionally, Prof. Díaz de Delgado has held academic and administrative positions such as Chair of the Chemistry Graduate program and Director of the Graduate Studies Division of the Faculty of Sciences (ULA), Chair of the Grant-in-Aid Committee of ICDD, and of the Communications Committee, General Interest SIG, and Small Molecules SIG of the ACA.
Her research interests are centered around the characterization of pharmaceuticals, natural products, metal-organic compounds, among others, by powder and single crystal X ray diffraction techniques using laboratory and synchrotron sources. Prof. Díaz de Delgado is also interested in symmetry patterns in art and participates in science outreach activities.
