Hans Dencker Thulstrup

Senior Programme Specialist for Water and Environmental Sciences at the UNESCO Office in Jakarta
Hans Dencker Thulstrup has an academic background in international science communication, networking and cooperation, holding an MSc degree from Roskilde University in Denmark and a PhD in Scientific Communication from the Australian National University in Canberra.
Hans is the Senior Programme Specialist for Water and Environmental Sciences at the UNESCO Office in Jakarta, now serving the office for the second time since joining the UNESCO Secretariat in 1996. Following assignments with the Man and the Biosphere and natural World Heritage programmes in Southeast Asia in Jakarta (1996-1998) and Bangkok (1998-1999), Hans assumed the duties of Adviser for Natural Sciences with the UNESCO Office for the Pacific States in Apia (Samoa) in 1999, with responsibility for the coordination of the Office’s natural science activities in the 17 Pacific member states. In 2008, Hans joined the Division for Science Policy and Capacity-Building at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, where he worked with the global coordination and implementation of interdisciplinary programmes in Small Island Developing States. In August 2013, Hans returned to Asia and the Pacific, serving as the Programme Specialist for Natural Sciences with the UNESCO Office in Beijing, serving the organization’s Natural Sciences programmes in China, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Japan, Mongolia and the Republic of Korea, before coming back to Jakarta in June 2017.
