Dr. Khalisah Zulkefli is a Research Associate in the Department of Biological Sciences at the School of Science and Technology at Sunway University, Malaysia. She obtained both her PhD (2018) and BSc (Hons) (2012) from the University of Melbourne, Australia. Her research was mainly based on utilising the latest gene editing technology, CRISPR/Cas9 in mammalian cells to dissect the roles of small G proteins involved in intracellular protein trafficking.
She is currently involved in the DIY Biology project established by the Global Young Academy and supported by the Volkswagen Foundation. The overarching aim of this project is to understand the global landscape of DIY Biology, build a knowledge base of the DIY Biology movement and its culture and identify unique opportunities to harness the exciting scientific potential of the DIY community while ensuring compliance to safety and security standards.
Khalisah is an aspiring science communicator and has extensive experience in science engagement with students from various levels through her previous work as a Scientist Mentor. She truly believes that effective science communication is an important tool in bridging gaps between the scientific communities and various stakeholders in increasing public engagement of science and technology especially in policymaking and risk regulation. She also hopes to combine her passion for science and love for graphic design and illustration to raise public understanding and awareness of science and inspiring the next generation of scientists.
